Talk by Kateřina Šedá

The Factory Effect – how do factories and work influence our lives? This question will be explored in a talk by artist Kateřina Šedá, who will present her work centered around the theme of labor. She will focus in particular on her project Nedá se svítit, which is represented in the exhibition by a selection of scarves from Nošovice embroidered across different time periods. Šedá will also discuss other works inspired by the theme of labor, including Elitka 100 and Je mi to jedno. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with the artist and the exhibition curator Anežka Jabůrková.

Kateřina Šedá’s presentation is part of the accompanying program to the exhibition Around the Clock: The Factory Effect and will follow a guided tour of the exhibition with curator Anežka Jabůrková and the artist herself, taking place on Thursday, 15 May at 6 PM at Pragovka Gallery.

Kateřina Šedá (born 1977) is a Czech artist whose practice closely intersects with social architecture. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1999 to 2005 under Professor Vladimír Kokolia. Her work focuses on socially driven projects that often involve hundreds of participants with no prior connection to art. Through experiments in human relationships, she aims to disrupt entrenched habits or social isolation. By provoking people’s engagement and repurposing everyday tools, she seeks to initiate lasting behavioral change.

Šedá has realized over 50 participatory projects both in the Czech Republic and internationally. Her work has earned numerous awards, including Architect of the Year (Czech Republic), Magnesia Litera for journalism (Czech Republic), TAKU Production Prize (Finland), Most Beautiful Czech Books (Czech Republic), Contemporary Art Society Award (UK), Jindřich Chalupecký Award (Czech Republic), and the Fluxus Award (Germany), among others.
