One of the most prominent contemporary artists of the Czech visual scene, he has long and systematically reflected in his characteristic, conciliatory and non-judgmental way on contemporary pop culture society in its full range of meaning, values and symbolic layers. In his works, the media-rich spectrum of visual language is characterised by the assemblage forms of narrative that are characteristic of our times. Richly charged with meaning, the images and objects draw inspiration not only from the ubiquitous inclination of postmodern global Western man towards the glittering objects of shared desire, but also follow in the footsteps of various forms of spiritual transcendence or the inner recesses of faith, they uncover a range of personal and pop mythologies, explore unconscious desires or reminiscences of human sexuality, but also unrepentantly point to the threats shaping the terrain of our everyday experience.
Pasta Oner is considered one of the most vital representatives of the contemporary Czech art scene. As a creative personality, Pasta Oner has in recent years intensively profiled himself within the confines of classic independent and public gallery spaces, in which he combines and transcends the traditional genre categories of pop-art and cartoon aesthetics. Although at the core of his work he touches upon the principles of ‘post-production’ or ‘appropriation’, Pasta Oner’s work breaks away from the dominant currents of post-conceptual strategies in contemporary art and treads an unconventional path in the Czech context of a media-savvy and widely known, sometimes even thoughtfully controversial artist whose work remains comprehensible even while maintaining a certain degree of semantic subversion.
Acrylic painting and the creation of hanging paintings are central to Paste’s work, as is the design of spatial objects, sculptures, installations, prints and unconventional innovative techniques.
