ou’re invited to the next event in the Mimo obraz (Beyond the Image) series: a lecture by Eliška Fulínová, Welcome to the Anthropocene!, on Wednesday, 25 November, at 6 pm at Pragovka Gallery.
This introductory lecture asks whether the Anthropocene really is a new human epoch, when it should be said to have begun, and whether it might already be coming to an end. We’ll look at the Anthropocene as a geological term, but also as a way of seeing: an old-new perspective that unsettles the traditional dualisms of nature and culture, science and art, and reason and emotion. Finally, we’ll consider together whether the Anthropocene is also marked by a particular mood and sensibility. If it is, we might understand it as an epoch that grows out of vulnerability and radical uncertainty, which push us to look for new answers even to questions we thought were settled not long ago.
Eliška Fulínová is a philosopher based in Prague at the Center for Theoretical Study, Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences, where she works on a number of interdisciplinary projects. Her research covers ancient thought and contemporary phenomenology. In recent years she has also worked on the concept of the Anthropocene. She explores it in Antropocennosti: průvodce světem antropocénu (Anthropocenities: A Guide to the World of the Anthropocene; Academia, 2024), a book she co-edited with her colleague Anna Kvíčalová.
The lecture will be in Czech.
