Lecture Scenarios of Future Development and Pathways to Sustainability

Please join us for another event in the Beyond the Image series: a lecture by Zuzana Harmáčková titled Scenarios of Future Development and Pathways to Sustainability on Thursday, May 28 at 6 pm at Pragovka Gallery.

Current politics and practice show that when searching for solutions to upcoming crises, we tend to limit our imagination to the world as it exists today. Yet the future for which we are seeking solutions will differ from the present. In what ways? And how can we work with the uncertainty inherently tied to the future? Scenarios of future development help us address these questions by enabling us to think across longer time horizons, engage more radical forms of imagination, and connect visions of the future with developments that are already emerging around us today. In doing so, they help us make better decisions and shape the world around us here and now. This lecture will focus on specific examples of existing scenarios, as well as the methods behind their creation and application.

Zuzana Harmáčková heads the Department of Socio-Ecological Analysis at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where she works on the analysis of future development scenarios and research into socio-ecological resilience across a range of contexts, including the Czech Republic, Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, within both international and Czech research projects. She has long contributed to the work of IPBES, an international science-policy platform focused on improving the transfer of sustainability knowledge between researchers and policymakers. She also teaches at the Charles University Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University.

The lecture will be held in Czech.
