Ewa Doroszenko and Jacek Doroszenko are a duo of intermedia artists from Warsaw exploring the relationship between sound, image, and landscape. Jacek Doroszenko is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Ewa Doroszenko earned her doctorate in fine arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Since 2014, as part of their international artist residencies, Ewa and Jacek Doroszenko have been creating unique scores in the form of video works, graphic and photographic installations. The resulting works have been presented by the artists in numerous exhibitions, including at the Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music in Wroclaw, the Polish Institute in Düsseldorf, Cidade das Artes in Rio de Janeiro, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in Vancouver, Fait Gallery in Brno, Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Naples, Contemporary Museum Wroclaw, FIESP Cultural Center Ruth Cardoso in Sao Paulo. The audio-visual exhibition “Overlooked Horizons” features recent works by the Doroszenko duo exploring the relationship between the observer and the natural landscape.
To better understand the causes of the current environmental crisis, the artists look at the history of the Western tradition of landscape painting, in which the concept of natural landscape was defined according to the dominant worldview – as a detached component, outside the subject. In their works, Ewa and Jacek Doroszenko aim to question the separation between the issue – the observer – and the detached environment.
A significant element of the Doroszenko duo’s artistic practice is to treat sound phenomena as a full-fledged element in the field of visual art and to emphasize the importance of “deep listening” in everyday life. Accordingly, the artists are interested in the landscape’s holistic experience, which is impossible without the acoustic factor. In their mixed-media projects, the artists explore how digital images, and the latest technologies mediate the perception of the natural world. Fascinated by modern information tools and their immense potential for shaping lifestyles, Ewa and Jacek Doroszenko attempt to capture the atmosphere of the physical yet virtual present. Looking at the textures of landscapes – both natural and simulated – the artists highlight the role of photography in navigating the current world. Using Google Street View, popular computer games, travel guides and other online sources, the artists examine how contemporary digital culture is changing the perception of the landscape.
The works presented during the exhibition are based on the artists’ insights from numerous real and virtual journeys. Just as in the late 18th century people travelled in search of “genius loci” places, sights and moods that transported them to another time and allowed them to distance themselves from everyday life, today the Doroszenko duo discovers landscapes with unique qualities by taking artistic journeys online and offline. The artists’ works have been created as part of international Artist-in-Residence programs, including at Kunstnarhuset Messen Ålvik (Norway), The Island Resignified Lefkada (Greece), AAVC Hangar Barcelona (Spain), and Pragovka Gallery (Czech Republic).
