How to Look At Pit Ponies?
In her long-term artistic research, Sára Märc explores multispecies relations within extractivist and energy systems. During her residency at Pragovka, she focused on the history of pit ponies — horses and ponies who for centuries worked in underground coal mines across Europe.
The project reflects on the forgotten lives of these animals, whose labour in the dark shafts helped to satisfy humanity’s hunger for “black gold” and to drive the expansion of the fossil industry. By combining academic research, performative lecture, and video essay, Sára reveals how the history of industrialisation is also a history of interspecies entanglement between animals, technologies, and humans. The work invites reflection on the ethics of extractivism, the notion of progress, and the transformation of our relationship to the planet.
