Passion, obsession with art, and an unwavering determination to follow one’s dreams. Photographer Marie Tomanová came to New York as an au pair and broke through in the highly competitive local photography scene. Director Marie Dvořáková followed her with a camera over the course of five years, creating the feature-length documentary The World Between Us. The film captures Tomanová’s early successes overseas and her rapid rise, as well as her deep personal and artistic partnership with art historian Thomas Beachdel — a relationship without which she might never have fully developed her talent. Thanks to Dvořáková’s original directorial approach and the extraordinary openness of the protagonists, we are offered a glimpse into a story of the American dream come true. The two Maries are connected by their shared experience of moving to the United States, building a career in a new environment, and searching for roots, identity, and home. (source: Pilot Film)
